Compressor Suction Hose Leaking Refrigerant?

There are two possible causes of this leak. One, the hose is rubbing on the chassis below the engine causing a hole to develop, or two, there is not enough distance between the hose mounting clamp and the compressor. As the engine moves it puts strain on the hose and tends to pull the rubber hose otu of the compressor fitting. This causes a leak at the point where the rubber hose joins the fitting, which can be difficult to see as the hose at this point is covered with heat protection.

The Resolution:

The cure is to replace the pipe with the correct pipe for the vehicle application, following this step-by-step guide to ensure a correct and efficient repair - the first time.

1. Release pipes from the compressor by removing the bolt holding the pipe clamp plate.

2. Remove the bolt from the pipe joint next to the charging ports and disconnect the pipes.

3. Loosen the mounting bolt which attaches the pipe joint to the cooling fan frame and release the pipes. Please note, there is no need to remove this bolt.

4. Remove the two hose clamps holding the hose to the lower chassis.

5. Slide aside the rubber dust protection and release the pipe joint on the compressor discharge hose using a specifically designed spring lock removal tool.

6. Delphi's spring lock removal tool is clipped around the pipe and slides into the joint, releasing the internal clips and allowing the pipe to be withdrawn.

7. Slide the new pipe into place and remove the hose assembly. Be sure to refit the replacement pipe, however, do not refit the hose clamp.

The refrigerant leak is fixed. Job done!
